My name is Marian Rettig. For 27 years I have been working with children and their families as a Montessori preschool teacher & owner, nanny, and pediatric medical assistant. My passion is preparing educational environments, especially for children newly birthed through five years old.
Working with children in classrooms and in-home settings has given me a unique understanding of materials & toys that children naturally gravitate toward and has helped me develop a storage system that allows for quick and efficient turn over of materials. My Montessori and preschool experience has taught me that environment dictates the child. If the space is functional and fosters freedom of choice it can unleash independence within a child.
My goal is to prepare playspaces that aid children for life by developing skills such as completing a cycle of work, problem solving and self-sufficiency. I want to curate play spaces that foster independence and encourage care of the environment, which in turn is carried from home to school, to community, then throughout the world.
Every space that I build is informed by my training and teaching in Montessori. The Montessori method views the child as naturally eager for knowledge and capable of initiating their own learning in a supportive environment in which materials are size appropriate, organized, and within reach.
A child who feels capable to act in the world without the need for an adult at every obstacle is a child who is developing self- confidence, self-reliance, and competence.
Montessori supports the ability to educate oneself and to analyze what one is learning. This promotes internal satisfaction which drives curiosity and interest throughout life.
Prepared playspaces nurture the child’s need for order and establish a reliable environment. It is here that a safe and positive world view is formed.
